Gout is unlike any other bone disease, in that it is a metabolic disorder. It also tends to be hereditary. One of the primary causes of gout is the presence of excessive uric acid in the blood. When that happens, the surplus uric acid gets deposited around the joints and certain soft tissues of the body. These deposits develop into swollen and painful areas called tophi. The pain increases in intensity as more fluid collects in the spaces within the joints as well as soft tissues.
There are ways to prevent as well as common home remedies for gout which have proven to be effective in providing relief. If you or someone you care for suffers from gout you can take help from the following suggestions:
- Since gout is caused by accumulation of excessive uric acid, avoid food stuff that stimulates the production of uric acid in your body, like heavy foods, protein, alcohol, coffee, and even soft drinks.
- Eat foods that have high potassium content.
- When there is severe pain, use an ice pack and hot towel compress, alternating every 10 minutes. This will help soothe the pain.
- You should also take lemon juice regularly, as it helps form calcium carbonate in the body.
